António Tomás, College of Johannesburg

Specializing in his lately revealed ebook, Amílcar Cabral: The Lifetime of a Reluctant Nationalist, Dr. Tomás will draw parallels between Du Bois’ Black Reconstruction and Cabral’s writing on the agrarian construction of Portugal and its colonies. The intention is to grapple with Black Reconstruction’s affect on colonial struggles and international black thought. Dr. Tomás will achieve this by probing the reception of Du Bois’ concepts in continental Portugal and its dominated territories in Africa, and the articulation of Du Bois’ ideas into operative and sensible rules in opposition to Portuguese colonialism. He’ll conclude by discussing the methods during which Black Reconstruction nonetheless yields essential insights to grapple with the colour line in up to date Portugal, because the society that harbors the most important diasporic neighborhood from the previous “Portuguese” Africa.
